A few years ago, I bought an old Swiss wristwatch. Not because I thought it was a rare treasure, but because there was something about it that drew me in - the patina, the age, the mystery. At first glance it was strikingly plain. The dial was completely unbranded, with only Roman numerals, a small seconds register at six o’clock, and a surface that had yellowed over the decades. Inside the case back, however, there was a telling scratch - “Nivada Watch Corp”.

This instantly fired my imagination. Could it really be a Nivada that had somehow lost its original dial? Or was it simply a note left by a watchmaker who had once serviced it? Deep down I hoped the memory of those craftsmen was not mistaken and that I was holding a forgotten piece of history.

There was a small glimmer of hope when I came across an advertisement from 1936. Although it was for a ladies’ watch, the dial was very similar to what I was looking for, and it, too, had no logo. Of course, these were still hand-drawn at the time, so it’s possible it was simply omitted, but the designers generally aimed for a faithful representation of the dials. What’s even more interesting is that the ad didn’t use the usual italicised letters, but printed capital letters instead. Watches with this kind of logo did exist, but as far as I know, only for a few years in the 1950s.

Identifying the movement - the Wehrmachtswerk

When I removed the case back, I immediately knew what I was looking at. Not because the maker’s name was engraved in bold letters, but because the architecture was unmistakable. The layout of the bridges, the position of the wheels, and the shape of the balance all gave it away - this was the AS 1130, A. Schild’s famous “Wehrmachtswerk”.

A. Schild was one of the most important suppliers in the Swiss watch industry for decades. The 1130 calibre was produced from the late 1930s into the 1950s. During the Second World War, it was supplied in large numbers to the German army, which is how it earned its nickname.

The Wehrmachtswerk’s popularity is easy to understand, it was robust, reliable and easy to service. Hundreds of brands built their watches around it, from military tools to elegant civilian pieces. In many ways, it represented the quiet heroism of Swiss watchmaking, a foundation on which generations could rely.

The Nivada connection

Yet that scratched inscription “Nivada Watch Corp” continued to intrigue me. Nivada was one of the more interesting names of the mid-20th century , a Grenchen-based brand that later became famous for its Antarctic model, tested on polar expeditions. In the 1950s it gained a strong reputation, particularly in the American market.

But my watch dated back to the 1940s, when Nivada had not yet reached world fame. It is possible the watchmaker simply confused the movement with one from Nivada, or that his memory prompted him to write the name. What is missing is evidence - the movement carries no Nivada signature, and the dial has no trace of branding.

Longéau Precision - the familiar dial

In the course of my search I came across an intriguing parallel. There exists an almost identical dial - Roman numerals, small seconds, the same proportions - signed “Longéau Precision”. The name Longéau was used by Enicar for some of its markets.

For a moment I felt renewed hope, perhaps my watch was also an Enicar Longéau that had lost its branding. But the reality was sobering. Enicar almost always marked its AS movements with a logo. Mine has none. That fact strongly suggests that while the dial style is similar, this particular watch cannot be confidently linked to Enicar.

So the Longéau lead, though exciting, remains no more than a resemblance. The certainty I was looking for is still absent.

The value of an anonymous watch

The more I researched, the more I realised, this watch most likely never bore a famous name. It was a classic white-label piece, sold through a smaller retailer. The AS 1130 made it reliable, while the modest gold-plated case and wire lugs gave it a quiet everyday elegance.

Today it may seem odd that someone would buy a nameless watch when the big brands were available. But in 1940s Europe, this was often the practical choice - a trusted movement in a simple case. These were watches for daily life, not for shop-window prestige.

The logo is not the point

I must admit, there was some disappointment when I finally concluded, I could not tie this watch to Nivada or Enicar. But the more time I spent with it, the more I realised that is exactly what makes it special.

It is not a famous model, but a fragment of its era. A memory from the 1940s, when Swiss watchmaking was still a mosaic of small parts, and the only real priority was keeping accurate time. The AS 1130 delivered exactly that.

My watch does not currently run - the balance spring is broken. But I have already sourced another AS 1130 movement as a donor for parts, so it can be repaired in time.

And when I finally hear it tick again, I will no longer be looking for a missing logo. Instead, I will think of this anonymous watch as a witness to its age, and as part of my own story. Not every watch tells a tale of world fame, but every watch has a story for those who care to listen.

You know that feeling when you’ve been searching for something for a long time, only to discover that an unexpected encounter creates a much deeper bond? For me, that was supposed to be the Nivada F77. One of the most distinctive integrated-case sports watches of the 1970s, with its tapestry-pattern dial, razor-sharp edges and undeniable Genta spirit. It has everything that makes collectors fall for the vintage steel-case era – and collectors, of course, are fully aware of this.

For quite some time now it has been changing hands at prices that – even if I could afford them – go well beyond what I could comfortably spend on a watch. I did consider picking up the re-issued version Nivada released a few years back, but somehow I resonate far more with the vintage line.

Then, almost by chance, something appeared that I hadn’t expected: an Atlantic Beachboy. At first I just felt there was something oddly familiar about it. The case shape carried the angular character of Nivada’s F2 series, but the overall impression came surprisingly close to the feel of the F77. Almost as if it were a cousin – or perhaps a reincarnation under another name.

And the price… well, it set me back scarcely more than a decent supper. That’s how this piece came into my collection, and it has become much more than a mere substitute for a Nivada.

Atlantic officially used the type name Beachboy as a single word. While on watch forums it often appears split into two, the factory prints and dial make it clear this was the proper styling. The choice of name was no accident: in the early-to-mid 1970s several Swiss brands experimented with catchy English model names that would appeal more easily to international markets, particularly in North America.

Beachboy evoked both the laid-back West Coast lifestyle and a sporty, youthful spirit – even if today such naming might feel a touch naïve.

Tracing the Shared DNA: Time-Center and Protime SA

As mentioned in the article on the Permadate, in the late 1960s several smaller Swiss brands – typically from around Grenchen, then still more of an industrial small town than a watchmaking powerhouse – joined forces to form the consortium Time-Center. Among the members were Nivada, Atlantic, Rodania, Selectron and Vilard.

From 1973 onward, this loose cooperation continued as Protime SA, with the aim of pooling development, sharing manufacturing capacity, and building multiple brands on the same technical foundations in anticipation of the quartz crisis.

This explains why the very same watch (for example, the Permadate with AS2086 movement) sometimes appeared under different brand names depending on the target market. Nivada often pursued this strategy, and it seems the F77 was also touched by it.

I’m no watch historian – just an enthusiastic amateur who enjoys digging into these old connections. This article is nothing more than the observations of a hobby collector, in a world where old catalogues, case shapes and logos reveal much more than one might think at first glance.

Since Atlantic was one of the official founders, the striking parallels between the Beachboy and the F77 show that it was not only a matter of brand name but also of shared design and manufacturing. Common case shapes, design features and components were not coincidences, but rather traces of a time when multiple brands relied on the same industrial and stylistic expertise – working together, yet each with its own face.

The era of integrated steel cases was not just the playground of the giants like Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe; smaller players, too, sought to join the style competition. Often the same case makers (e.g. Monnin, Schmitz) supplied forms to several brands, with the individuality added through the logo, dial or hands.

Survivors and the Disappeared – Who Lasted?

Protime SA worked successfully for a while, but the waves of the quartz crisis gradually eroded the foundations of small and mid-tier Swiss brands. Around the same time, with far greater resources and a more centralised approach, the predecessor of the Swatch Group (SMH) was formed – an organisation that ultimately secured the survival of the industry in a far more structured way.

Smaller consortiums like Protime, by contrast, were more informal and loosely organised, making them less able to weather the restructuring. Some names vanished entirely: Selectron and Vilard today live only in collectors’ memories. Felca, however, survives as Titoni. Others – such as Nivada or Rodania – disappeared for decades before enjoying a recent renaissance through re-editions. Atlantic, meanwhile, though often underrated, carried on continuously and thus remains a living reminder of that period when the boundaries between brands were far more fluid.

The F77’s Place in Its Era

One might rightly ask whether the octagonal, screw-head, integrated-case design was not simply following in the footsteps of the Royal Oak. Audemars Piguet’s legendary model, designed by Gérald Genta, debuted in 1972 and essentially created an entirely new category: the luxury sports watch.

The Nivada F77 appeared only in 1977, so chronologically it was later, and in terms of design traits (octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet, steel case) it might seem like a copy.

Yet for some reason it was never considered one. The reason is that the F77 was positioned in the mid-range, not in the luxury segment. It did not seek to poach the Royal Oak’s clientele but instead offered its own audience a similarly elegant yet accessible alternative. Moreover, it did not copy the Royal Oak’s design wholesale: the bezel was not truly screwed down but only featured decorative screw-heads; the tapestry dial, hands and case had their own distinctive character.

Several brands in the 1970s experimented with integrated, geometric sports-watch designs. Among them, the F77 was one of the most successful, with its own authentic identity.

As a result, the F77 has achieved cult status – not as a copy, but as a personality in its own right. Within the world of vintage Genta-style watches, it stands as a small island of its own, showing that even a brand with modest ambitions could create something enduring.

The Specific Example

The Atlantic Beachboy discussed here is powered by a Fabrique d’Horlogerie Fontainemelon (FHF) movement – specifically calibre 96-4. This is a 17-jewel, hand-wound mechanical calibre with a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, a 44-hour power reserve, and Incabloc shock protection. It measures 11.5’’’ lignes (around 25.6 mm / 1.0 in in diameter) and was beloved in its mid-range segment for its reliability and serviceability.

The case measures 37.2 mm (1.46 in) in width and 40 mm (1.57 in) in length – proportions that remain perfectly wearable and harmonious even by modern standards.

It is worth noting that FHF was one of the oldest Swiss movement makers, founded in 1793. They were responsible for several innovations, including patent CH 51482, one of the earliest registered solutions for what now seems obvious: the simple time-setting function by pulling out the crown.

These little details give the watch its true value. Not just the exterior design, but also the movement and historical background make the Beachboy more than an alternative – it is a storyteller in its own right.

My Watch, My Alternative

For me, the Atlantic Beachboy has been more than just a lucky find – it has felt like a real arrival. No, it isn’t a Nivada F77 on my wrist, but it’s something very close. The character, proportions and shape are all there. On top of that, it’s a piece few people know – which only adds to its charm.

Perhaps this is what vintage collecting truly offers: you don’t always get what you were looking for, but rather what you actually needed. And while summer may be drawing to a close, the Beachboy’s lingering “beach feeling” still rests on my wrist – as though a small piece of summer remains with me.

I still remember the first thing that caught my attention: the word “Permadate.” Honestly, I thought it referred to some old computer data storage technology — not a watch complication. Then I stumbled upon a Fratello article that changed everything. These watches were... odd. Not ugly, just different. The kind of different that makes you lean in closer to your screen, open the photo in a new tab, and start investigating. A few months later, I saw one pop up on eBay. It was a Nivada. Bold case, slightly battered dial, but it had the one feature I cared about: the full monthly calendar complication.

I messaged the seller. The price seemed excessive, so I politely but firmly offered half. Where I come from, that’s not an insult. If you don’t like the offer, you just say no. But this guy didn’t just reject it — he blocked me.

Well, not quite. A few weeks later, using my wife’s eBay account, I managed to buy the exact same watch from the exact same seller — and for the exact price I had originally offered.

But the story didn’t stop there. The more I dug into it, the more connections I found. Eddy Merckx reappeared — not in a marketing campaign or staged photoshoot, but in a candid press photo from the 1970s. The five-time Tour de France winner, a Belgian national hero, one of the greatest cyclists in history — wearing a Rodania Permadate. No fanfare. No product placement. Just a quiet moment, captured by a journalist. A tool on the wrist, chosen by him.

That one detail changed a lot for me. Because if someone who lived at the very peak of physical performance and practicality chose to wear this watch, then it meant more than a stylish decision. It was a kind of validation. A confirmation that these watches are real — not flashy, but functional. And in many ways, that’s exactly what we’re looking for in vintage watches.

A Special Movement: The AS2086

The watch runs on the A. Schild AS2086, a movement that doesn’t seem revolutionary at first glance — until you notice one little detail. It’s not your typical day-date or quickset date. Alongside the regular date disc, there’s a large printed calendar on the dial itself — a kind of monthly planner, showing the days of the week, which advances once a month via a mechanical jumper.

It’s bold, borderline ugly — and because of that, beautiful. The layout dominates the dial in the most unapologetic way.

A. Schild was a key player in mid-20th-century Swiss movement manufacturing, and the AS2086 is one of its lesser-known but genuinely interesting automatic calibers. Its hand-wound sibling is the AS2084.

Nivada, Rodania, Villard, Selectron – Why So Many Names?

The biggest surprise wasn’t the eBay negotiation. It came later when I started looking for other examples and realized the exact same watch existed under several different brand names. Nivada, Rodania, Villard, Selectron — same case, same dial, same movement.

Why? The most likely explanation is this: during the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was common in the Swiss watch industry for smaller brands to collaborate. They would co-order cases, dials, even complete watches — only the brand logo would differ. This wasn’t modern OEM manufacturing as we know it. It was more of a survival strategy. Smaller brands could save on production costs, while clever ideas — like the AS2086 movement — reached more markets under different names.

It’s also possible that certain distributors sold the same watch under different labels, tailored to specific regions. For instance, the Selectron might’ve been aimed at the German market, Rodania at Belgium, and Villard in French-speaking areas.

Today, this kind of diversity just adds to the charm. If you’re looking, you’ll find a variety of colorways and brand stamps. It’s a collector’s nightmare — but a geek’s dream.

My Permadate

Mine is a Nivada. The case has classic proportions, with a nice, worn patina. The dial has blemishes, some discoloration, and wear around the numerals — but that’s exactly what makes it lovable. It’s not perfect, and it doesn’t want to be. I didn’t buy it because it’s rare or expensive. I bought it because there’s something honest and functionally charming about it.

The date disc is bold, legible, and still jumps exactly as it should — daily and monthly. The day-date has a quickset option, but I haven’t figured out how it works for the monthly calendar yet.

What Does This Watch Mean to Me?

A Permadate won’t change your life. It’s not a Rolex. It’s not an Omega. Most people won’t even notice it on your wrist. But the ones who do? They’ll know what you were looking for — and what you found.

This watch reminds me that the most interesting things aren’t always hyped or famous. They’re in the small details others overlook. A movement that’s never been reissued. A design too quirky to clone. A story only you can tell.

And maybe that’s exactly what makes it special — to me, and hopefully to someone else who discovers one someday. Because once you really see a Permadate, you're no longer just reading the time. You’re looking at a mindset, a moment in history, and maybe — just maybe — a bit of Eddy Merckx’s quiet determination.
